🚀 OMG!! What is OMA?! Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) is a technique used to identify the modal parameters (natural frequencies, damping, and mode shapes) of a structure or object during its operational conditions. "Operational Modal Analysis" using the acoustic energy from Direct Field Acoustic Testing (DFAT®) was first performed between MSI DFAT in collaboration with Siemens Digital Industries Software. Since then, other copycat companies have tried to adapt our proven approach for operational modal analysis.
Here is a video demonstration to see for yourself how easily and quickly we can transform time-measured data from the acoustic test into mode shapes in under a minute on one ofThales Alenia Space's antenna units.
OMG! Check out the OMA workflow in Siemens Simcenter Testlab software.
For those interested in diving deeper into the pros/cons and theory/application of the OMA approach, here's a fantastic article on this topic from Siemens' "Testing Knowledge Base":
In recognition of MSI DFAT’s stellar reputation and trust among customers and industry peers, as reflected in the numerous nominations we received, Aerospace & Defense Review has honored MSI DFAT with the "Direct Field Acoustic Testing Company of the Year" award for 2025. MSI DFAT emerged as the winner following an exhaustive evaluation by an expert panel of C-level executives, industry thought leaders, and the editorial board.
Aerospace & Defense Review is read by over 45,000 readers in the U.S., including corporate management executives, senior leaders in design/R&D, scientists, engineers, system integrators, program managers, procurement executives, and technology decision-makers. The magazine follows a peer-to-peer learning model, serving as a reference point for industry insiders to learn about emerging technology trends and share how they are leveraging technology to accomplish various programs.
MSI DFAT is honored to be recognized for our commitment to our customers.
Since 1999, the MSI-DFAT team has launched over 230 acoustic tests, sharing knowledge both within the company and across the aerospace industry. With more than 275 combined years of acoustic testing experience, the team’s expertise reflects Malcolm Gladwell’s ‘10,000 hours rule,’ which asserts that it takes 10,000 hours to become a world-class expert in any field.
“We have dedicated an immense amount of time to one thing: DFAT. The commitment of our team is truly remarkable, and we have learned so much since our first test in 1999,” says Founder Bob Goldstein.
“And the future is incredibly bright. We’re just getting started. It’s only day one,” adds Alex Carrella, CEO and VP of Strategy and Growth at MSI-DFAT.
The masterclass is a 3-day hands-on live training event - not death by PowerPoint!
Attendees will gather around a tower of powerful loudspeakers for both theoretical presentations and live demonstrations of DFAN tests on a real structural satellite model.
